Princess Of Death | Chapter 7: Shards of Crystals and Ice

Aaron kept his distance, his gaze never wavering from Death, the grin spreading across her face a chilling reminder of what she was capable of. It was the kind of smile that made his instincts bristle—a hunter’s grin, sharp and expectant. Was she ready to end this now? Right here? A quick strike, swift and final, her dagger poised like an extension of her fury, humming with silent promise.

He shifted his weight, preparing for whatever she might do next. Death never made her moves quietly—no, she preferred the loud, destructive kind. A strike that left a mark. And this? This felt like one of those moments. If she chose to end it, right now, it would be more than just about him. It would send a message. His boss would feel it in every corner. Underestimate her, and you’d pay.

Frost began to curl around his fingers, a reflexive response to the knot of tension tightening in his gut. Was this loyalty? Ambition? It didn’t matter. Death was chaos embodied—wild, untamed, and far too unpredictable. And Aaron? He was just another piece on her board. A pawn, ready to be sacrificed if it served her purpose.

Lili broke the silence first, her voice soft, but carrying that mocking edge she was so good at. “Nervous, aren’t we?”

The words hit like a sting. Aaron clenched his jaw, the irritation flooding his system. She knew. Of course, she knew. And worse—she was enjoying it. The sick satisfaction that radiated from her smile cut deep, reminding him just how little she cared for anything beyond her own games.

Her laughter came next, a low, mocking sound that danced through the air and echoed off the walls. It wasn’t amusement—it was something darker, something that made his skin crawl. She wasn’t just teasing him. She was savoring the discomfort, feeding on it.

“Enough of the games,” he snapped, his voice harsh, cold. The words didn’t seem to faze her, though. She only leaned in a little closer, her boots scraping on the pavement with a deliberate slowness that made the tension grow thicker.

“Afraid I’ll take what you couldn’t?” she teased. Aaron’s gaze flickered down to the dagger at her side, watching as it hung there, waiting for her command to strike. His heart rate quickened, but he stood his ground. “I said stop.”

She didn’t flinch. Instead, her smile deepened, widening in a way that sent an involuntary shiver down his spine. But she turned, as though he didn’t matter, her focus shifting to the alley behind them.

“She shouldn’t be far,” Lili murmured, her voice dropping into something almost casual, but the way her shoulders tensed betrayed her. “Get ready.”

Aaron hesitated, his fingers twitching as the air around him thickened, the cold creeping deeper. He didn’t trust her, not for a second. But they both knew one thing: they needed each other—at least for now. Still he couldn’t shake the nagging thought at the back of his mind.

Would she kill him if it came down to it?

The cold in his veins didn’t come from the ice around him.

Without another word, Lili surged ahead, her movements quiet, almost effortless, as she cut through the darkness like a shadow. Aaron followed, his eyes sharp, scanning the alley ahead where two figures—Joyce and Miriam—rushed through the darkness, their escape frenzied and disorganized. Panic was clear in every misstep, every ragged breath.

“There,” Lili hissed, her dagger flicking forward, but before she could react herself, Aaron’s hand rose, the temperature dropping sharply as frost spread outward in jagged veins, racing along the ground to encase the girls’ ankles in a thick shell of ice. Miriam gasped, stumbling as her legs froze mid-step. Joyce barely caught herself, her legs locking in place.

It wasn’t like Lili to hesitate. She was always the first to strike, charging into danger with unmatched confidence, emerging victorious every time. But now, as she stood there, watching Miriam, something inside her stalled. Her mind raced, fragments of memories flashing through her head, unraveling the tight hold of certainty she was known for.

Lili recognized her instantly. Miriam was the girl Lili had been searching for—the lead that could take her further down the path she had been chasing. She was the daughter of the woman Lili had visited. Miriam was connected to everything Lili had been working toward, the missing piece to unlock the next chapter of her pursuit.

But then doubt began to creep in. What did it mean if Aaron was after the same woman? Lili’s mind spun with the implications. No, Miriam couldn’t be the one Aaron was after. She wasn’t the target. Lili had managed to track down another individual, someone running alongside Miriam, someone she couldn’t quite place but who felt far more crucial than Miriam herself. Still, the coincidence weighed heavily on her. What if Aaron’s boss wasn’t simply hunting down some random Gifted? What if this was all part of a larger scheme—one designed to sabotage her, to throw her off course? What if Aaron’s involvement wasn’t about the mission at all, but about disrupting Lili’s plans, ensuring she couldn’t finish the task her boss had entrusted her with?

The thought gnawed at her, a dark suspicion growing with every passing second. Had she been played?

“Now!” Aaron’s voice broke through her thoughts, sharp and commanding. The icy air around them seemed to crackle with tension as his breath misted in the cold. Lili’s hesitation melted away, replaced by the hard, unrelenting focus that defined her. But even as she moved into action, the question lingered in her mind: Was this just another obstacle in a game she didn’t fully understand, or was she on the verge of uncovering something far more dangerous than she’d anticipated?

Lili’s dagger shifted in the air with a fluid motion, poised to strike.

Joyce’s head snapped toward them, her trembling hands raising. Ice formed around her, shimmering with the light from the streetlamps, sharp and lethal. The air between them thickened with danger.

Lili’s eyes glowed red, her smile widening into something feral. The dagger lengthened, its form twisting into a deadly arc that hovered in front of her, ready to tear through the air.

Aaron’s voice dropped to a near whisper, laced with warning. “Don’t move, or it’ll get worse.”

Joyce’s lips curled into a sneer. “Not if I break it first.”

She thrust her hands forward, and the crystals exploded from her fingertips, shooting toward them like arrows. Lili’s dagger darted forward, intercepting one, but before Aaron could react, the ground around them cracked and buckled, ice racing to form jagged barriers that stopped the rest.

Joyce’s eyes blazed with intensity as she clenched her fists, her crystals shifting and pulsing. The ice began to break, the barrier splintering under the pressure. Miriam, her feet free now, stumbled backward, her body already tensing for the next attack.

“Death!” Aaron growled, his voice sharp as he watched the ice crumble.

“I see it!” Lili responded with a snarl, her dagger snapping toward Joyce, but the girl ducked, flinging another burst of crystals in retaliation. The weapon spun back, shattering the attack mid-air.

Miriam lunged, her fists flying. Aaron caught her wrist, twisting it and sending her reeling, but she fought back with surprising strength. Joyce, not far behind, summoned another wave of sharp crystals, surrounding them like a deadly cage.

Aaron’s fingers twitched again, the chill returning to his skin as the ice spread once more, locking the girls in place. Lili’s blade hovered beside him, ready for the next move.

And then, as the chaos unfolded, the fight began in earnest.

Aaron’s breath escaped in sharp puffs, the cold air swirling as Miriam’s punch landed near him. Her strikes were fast and precise—designed to break through his defense. He sidestepped, his foot scraping against the city ground, and the ice beneath her feet expanded, sending her off-balance. In that split second, he struck, sending a line of frost up her arm.

She hissed, twisting away, but Aaron was already moving, his palm pressing against her wrist. A jagged spike of ice shot out, forcing her to stagger backward.

“Stay down,” he warned, his voice clipped, cold as the frost around them.

Miriam’s defiance blazed in her eyes, but before she could charge again, a dagger whistled through the air. It struck the ground just inches from her feet, and with a flick of Lili’s fingers, it exploded outward, driving her further back.

“Don’t give her room!” Aaron protested.

Lili was already in motion. Her dagger snapped back to the air, elongating as she hurled it toward Joyce.

Joyce reacted instantly, her hands lifting as a burst of crystals erupted around her, blindingly bright. The jagged shards shot toward Lili like missiles.

Lili’s red eyes flashed as her dagger spun and broke apart into smaller pieces, intercepting the crystals midair. Sparks flew as they collided, scattering the shards across the ground.

Aaron seized the opening. Dropping to one knee, he slammed his hands into the frozen earth, and jagged ice shot up around him. It forced Joyce back, but she wasn’t caught off guard for long. She rolled, her crystals reshaping, hurling toward Aaron’s exposed side.

“Move!” Lili shouted.

Before Aaron could react, the dagger was there. It snapped into position, blocking the shards just inches from his flesh. He shot her a sharp look—half gratitude, half frustration—but didn’t hesitate.

Another wall of ice formed between him and Joyce, forcing her to take a step back.

“Enough!” Lili’s voice cut through the chaos, demanding compliance.

Her dagger twisted, expanding into a wide arc that trapped Joyce between its edge and the ice wall. Joyce froze, her breath ragged and shallow.

Miriam charged. Aaron was ready. Dropping low, he swept his arm out, and frost exploded beneath her feet, freezing her leg in mid-stride. She hit the ground hard, cursing.

“You’re not winning this,” Lili spat, her tone icy.

Joyce’s scream pierced the air as Lili’s dagger struck. The blade sank into her shoulder, twisting midair under Lili’s control. Crystals shattered around them, their sharp edges falling harmlessly to the ground. Joyce staggered, trembling hands reaching for the blade—but it was already too late.

Lili’s dagger pulsed with red light before erupting, painting the ground in crimson streaks. Joyce crumpled, her body folding into the frozen earth.

Miriam stood frozen, her eyes wide, the weight of Joyce’s defeat settling in.

“Stay where you are!” Lili snapped, her dagger hovering at Miriam’s throat before she could move. “I need her alive,” she told to Aaron, eyes never leaving Miriam.

Aaron didn’t answer.

Lili’s focus flickered. She registered the movement too late.

A spike of ice pierced Miriam’s chest, blooming with blood as she gasped, her lips parting in shock before she crumpled, lifeless.

Lili’s heart seized. Her dagger whipped back to the air next to her body, trembling. “You—”

“She was a loose end,” Aaron’s voice was flat, emotionless, as he turned away.

Lili’s fury ignited. Her dagger flew toward him, but Aaron spun, catching it midair as a shield of ice flared up between them.

“She was mine!” Lili’s voice cracked as she pushed harder, shattering the ice around him. Aaron stumbled back but didn’t break.

“You knew the deal,” Aaron’s tone was cold, distant. “Joyce was the target. Miriam was expendable.”

“She was my lead!” Lili’s dagger fractured into shards, swirling around him like a deadly storm. “Do you have any idea what you just ruined?”

“I finished the mission,” Aaron snapped, his words cutting the air. He lashed out with another wave of ice, but Lili was already moving, her dagger severing the frost before it could reach her.

“She wasn’t part of your mission!” Lili screamed.

“They were together, so yes, she was!” Aaron’s voice turned guttural, his composure fraying as the ice erupted once more. But Lili was relentless, cutting through the blasts with surgical precision.

Her blade tore through the air, and Aaron raised walls of ice to protect himself over and over again. The cold bit into her skin, but the fire in her veins was worse.

Aaron’s ice crashed toward her, but Lili was already on the attack. Her dagger splintered once again, cutting through the frost with ease. She couldn’t—wouldn’t—stop.

“You think this is over?” she spat, her voice a razor-sharp hiss.

Aaron’s breath was ragged, the frost curling around him. “Stop it. It’s already done.”

But Lili didn’t stop. Her dagger reformed, blazing with blood and fury. She closed the distance between them, prepared to finish this once and for all.

Lili’s breath came in shallow gasps as she stepped closer, the cold air thick with the scent of blood. Aaron stood opposite, shards of ice forming around his hands. The icy ground cracked with every step she took, but she didn’t stop.

“Don’t do this,” Aaron warned, his voice cutting through the tension. “You’re making a mistake.”

Lili’s dagger hovered before her, edges gleaming with an eerie light. Her molten red eyes burned as she hissed, “You already made it.”

The alley seemed to close in around them. Miriam’s lifeless body lay cold behind Aaron, and Lili’s fury only sharpened.

Aaron’s ice surged, jagged and swift. Lili responded with a flick of her hand, her dagger splintering midair to pass through the gaps in his defenses. She moved so quickly, he barely had time to react before the pieces reformed, driving into his shoulder.

He stumbled, but she didn’t relent.

With a flick of her wrist, the dagger tore free, arcing back to her. Aaron raised another shield, but she was faster. The dagger shattered his defense again, driving deep into his leg.

Aaron hit the ground with a grunt, gasping in pain. Frost spread under his fingers as he tried to push himself up, but Lili was already upon him.

“You should have known better!” she screamed, her voice echoing in the narrow space. A boot slammed into his side, sending him crashing back to the ground. “You piece of shit!”

Aaron groaned, barely conscious. Another kick landed, then another, the pain blurring his vision.

“You thought it was funny? I’ll show you how funny it is! You will pay for this!” she shrieked, rage twisting her words. “Your boss will pay for this!

Aaron didn’t answer. His body stilled, his eyes closing as consciousness slipped away.

Lili staggered back, her breath ragged. Her dagger hovered in the air beside her, trembling.

She didn’t check to see if he was still alive.

Her eyes shot to Miriam’s body. Panic clawed at her chest. What if Miriam was the only lead?

Lili’s hands shook as she pressed them against the cold alley wall, trying to steady herself. The fear wouldn’t loosen its grip. She could already hear the voice of her boss in her mind—calculating, ruthless, unforgiving. There would be no excuses.

She slammed her fist into the brick wall, pain searing through her knuckles, kneels pressing to the cold ground.

“Damn it!” she muttered, her voice tight with dread.

She had to leave. Had to find a way out of this mess before it swallowed her whole.

She forced herself to her feet, ignoring the blood on her hands and the pain in her legs. She stepped over Aaron’s unmoving form, boots crunching against ice and shattered glass, her mind racing.

The alley stretched out before her—dark, endless. She didn’t know where she was going, but she knew one thing: she had to think of a plan. Fast. Because if she didn’t, she wasn’t sure she’d live long enough to fix this…
